John Bilsborough is a Lancashire lad who has done many of the things that writers do, but hasn't yet driven a truck or run away to sea. But, despite having little sense of direction or ambition, he has
  • written one or two little gems that might last forever
  • created hundreds of topical poems and features for local radio, Radio 1, 2, 3 and mostly 4, the BBC World Service and assorted tv series and made millions of people think a little and laugh a lot.
    He has also
  • made candlesticks for Heals of Tottenham Court Road and a small shop on the island of Tonga,
  • painted parrots and palm trees for Morecambe Illuminations, before
  • teaching Liberal Studies to Thick-Plate Welders II at Accrington Tec, before
  • running away to a life of self-insufficiency in a derelict Welsh idyll, keeping goats, growing onions, composting everything and looking for further evidence of intelligent life on Earth, before
  • having his talk series "According to Bilsborough", co-starring a clockwork chicken, nominated for a Sony radio award.

Now, after 20 years in the Gwendraeth Valley, he frets about what to do when he grows up, but the house is nearly finished, the goats are long gone, the garden is coming on a treat and his wise and witty words have appeared everywhere from "The Bee-Keepers Journal" to "Cosmopolitan" magazine, from postcards to rag-mags, learned journals and teaching packs for kids, alternative Christmas cards...

He works with schools, day centres, publishers and projects of all sorts and writes lyrics for musicals and odd jokes for tv comics. He reads his inimitable verses anywhere, anytime - even, on occasions, on licensed premises after dark. Some say that there's a "real" poet in there somewhere, and he might not deny it.
